MetroPCS - Unlimited usage with only 10mHz of spectrum

Postby scott_currier » Fri Mar 20, 2009 10:35 am

Metro has only 10 mHz of spectrum, which is really 5 because of the phones being full duplex.

The base stations transmit in a 5 mHz block at 2100 mHz and the handsets transmit back in a 5 mHz block at 1700 mHz.

With such little spectrum, it will be interesting to see if they can maintain a decent QOS during the busy hours. Fortunately they are using CDMA so they can have a frequency reuse of 1. Each cell and sector can use all the spectrum that Metro has, if it makes sense to do so.

In order to make up for the lack of spectrum, they are going to have to resort to cell splitting later or start out with many small cells in order to be able to have the capacity to handle a large number of simultaneous calls that they are likely to have during the busy hours.

More base stations means more money, more rent, more maintenance.

It will be interesting to see how they handle the problem.

To put things into perspective. The incumbent cellular carriers each have 25 mHz of spectrum at 800.

In this area, VZ and ATT each have just over 100 mHz of spectrum, which I believe is a little over the limit.

Trying to do data at a decent speed and unlimited voice is likely to be a challenge.

Any comments?

I know they aren't using it yet but they did buy some 700mhz at that auction because they knew they were short here.

In the next city over, a few "portable" (as I now call them) cell sites have popped up, being installed atop telephone poles. These are believed to be metroPCS sites. These have only one cell mounted atop the pole, with supporting equipment mounted on the telephone pole itself about 15' or so above street level. One such site had its cell beamed directly towards an apartment located upstairs from a convenience store. A week later, this site was moved to the next telephone pole down, in front of a one-story building.

With Verizon switching to LTE at some point, metroPCS would likely have to do the same in the future, unless Sprint sticks with CDMA and then becomes a roaming partner with Sprint, replacing Verizon.

There is an installation fitting that description in Andover, MA. It supports multiple carriers. ATT is on it. I found a total of six. 3 were on route 125 and the other 3 were on route 28. The antennas are omnidirectional and the system works well, it fills in an area of 125 that previously was somewhat weak as well as a stretch of route 28 that was a problem.

Overall, the installation seems to work well.

The roaming map for Metropcs closely resembles Sprint as opposed to Verizon. I suspect that they are roaming with Sprint.

is the last PRL (preferred roaming list) for metroPCS posted to cellresource.net. Although it appears to be outdated since it does not list any Boston networks for metroPCS, it does show roaming coverage on Alltel (which Verizon recently acquired) and Verizon itself. No Sprint SID's are in that particular list.
